Description

We tell children to take a deep breath hundreds of times. What we rarely do is show them how. Breathing Shapes close that gap- giving the breath a form to follow, so the body can do what it already knows how to do.

Each shape is an acrylic guide for a different breathing technique. Your child traces the edges with one finger- slowly, following the line. While their breath follows the shape. Inhale along one side. Exhale along the other. The geometry does the thinking, so the body can do the feeling.

This is not a distraction from big emotions. It’s a doorway through them. When a child’s system is flooded- when they’re in the middle of a storm they don’t know how to name- breath is one of the few things that can reach them. Not talking. Not reasoning. Breath. Give it a shape, and it becomes something a child can actually find.

Why this works:

When a child is overwhelmed, the thinking, language-processing part of their brain is largely offline. That’s why “calm down” rarely helps- you’re asking a part of them that can’t quite hear you yet. But tracing something? That’s concrete. That’s tactile. That lands in the body first, and the body knows exactly what to do with it. The exhale lengthens. The shoulders drop. The storm starts to pass.

They’re beautiful enough to leave on a desk, a windowsill, a shelf. This matters. A tool that’s out is a tool that gets used. Children reach for things that are accessible and inviting- not things stored in a drawer for emergencies. Let the Breathing Shapes sit quietly in the room, and watch your child reach for them without being asked.

Moments they’re made for:

Introduce during calm moments first- make it play, make it curious, before it’s ever needed

Trace together, side by side- your breath slowing alongside theirs is co-regulation in its purest form

Before homework or any task that needs a settled, focused mind

As a bedtime ritual, one shape, one breath, every night. The body learns through repetition

Give them the choice of which shape feels right. That small act of agency changes everything
